Agra is home to the Taj Mahal, one of the seven Wonders of the World and is one of the most prefered tourist destinations in India. Needless to say, it appears on the itinerary of not just domestic tourists but also foreign travelers. Agra is placed in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and along with Jaipur and Delhi forms the Golden Triangle of Indian tourism.
Though Agra's history is largely recognised with Mughal Empire, the place was established much before it and has linkages since Mahabharat period so Mahirshi Angira in 1000 BC. It is broadly accepted that Sultan Sikandar Lodi, the Ruler of the Delhi Sultanate founded Agra in the year 1504. After the Sultan's death the city passed on to his son Sultan Ibrahim Lodi. He ruled his Sultanate from Agra till he fell fighting to Babar in the First battle of Panipat fought in 1526.
Agra district is surrounded by Mathura District on the north, Dholpur District of Rajasthan state on the south, Firozabad District on the east and Bharatpur District of Rajasthan State on the west. Area of the district is 4028 km².
Taj Mahotsav is a grand 10 day long fiesta which enthrails the one who witnesses. The festival is organised each year in Feb/March at Shilpgram, near the Taj Mahal. Many of the renowned Indian artists perform at this prestigious event. The Taj Food Festival is additional attraction of this event.
Ram Barat is another gala event which is celebrated by organizing the marriage procession of Sri Rama each year before Dussehra.
Kailash Fair is another event to look out fir if one is visiting Agra. It is organized in the Kailash temple. Which is situated just 12 km away.
The Sharadotsav held in October, is a culture show with the country’s leading dancers and musicians performing at historical loations in the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.Show less
