Description

The fort of Jaisalmer is a exciting sight: a massive sandcastle rising from the sandy plains like a mirage from a bygone eon. No place better extort exotic camel-train trade routes and desert mystery. Ninety-nine bastions enclose the fort’s still-inhabited twisting lanes. Inside are shops sheathe in bright embroideries, a royal palace and numerous businesses looking for your tourist rupee. Despite the commercialism it’s hard not to be fascinated by this desert citadel. Beneath the ramparts, particularly to the north, the narrow streets of the old city conceal striking havelis, all carved from the same golden-honey sandstone as the fort – hence Jaisalmer’s designation as the Golden City.

The History of Jaisalmer has a magic of its own. Like all other cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer too has its own gorgeous past to boast about. History of Jaisalmer draws heavily from the history of the Rajputana. The city is said to be founded by one Raja Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput ruler, in 1156 A D. Legends go by that he did it on the precept of a local hermit named Eesaal. The raja choose Trikut hill as the new site for his fort. This was because he thought that his previous abode at Luderwa (16 km from present Jaisalmer) was accessible towards possible enemy assault.

The breath (East-West) of the district is 270 Kms and the length (North-South) is 186 Kms. On the map, district Jaisalmer is bounded on the north by Bikaner, on the west & south-west by Indian boarder, on the south by Barmer and Jodhpur, and on the east by Jodhpur and Bikaner Districts.

Desert Festival of Jaisalmer is a colorful festival held in February every year. You will get to see Cultural events, camel races, turban tying competitions etc. Not exciting enough! Attend the contests to judge the man with the best moustache. Everything is exotic in the Desert festival, amidst the golden sands of the Thar Desert. With a final musical performance by folk singers under the moonlit sky at the dunes in Sam, just outside Jaisalmer, the festival comes to its end. The rich culture of the region is on display during this three daylong extravaganza.
