An unexpected turn on the Kotdwar-Pauri road brings you to a pretty hill station, Lansdowne, in the Pauri Garhwal region of Uttranchal. Lansdowne is set amidst beautiful surroundings – tall oaks and blue pines rise like spires off the mountainside. The forests are lovely , dark and deep, just ideal for those long walks and picnins. There are amazing mountain views of the Western Himalayas from a number of vantage pints like Snow and Tiffin Top.

Like other hill resorts in north India, Lansdowne too has its fair share of temples and shrines, most of them dedicated to the various forms of the Mother Goddess.

Lansdowne lost its existence to the British who established a Garhwal Rifles cantonment here during the Raj era. They specified this hill-station cantonment in honour of the Earl of Lansdowne, Sir Petty-Fitzmaurice, the Viceroy of India (1888-1894). The town is well refined thanks to the cantonment, yet it is charmingly unspoiled and tranquil.

Lansdowne has an average elevation of 1,706 metres (5,686 feet). Surrounded by thick oak and blue pine forests, Lansdowne has scenic beauty and good surroundings.

Rajasthan’s beautiful Pink City Jaipur, was the stronghold of a clan of rulers whose three hill forts and series of palaces in the city are important attractions. Known as the Pink City because of the colour of the stone used exclusively in the walled city, Jaipur’s bazaars sell embroidered leather shoes, blue pottery, tie and dye scarves and other exotic wares. Western Rajasthan itself forms a convenient circuit, in the heart of the Thar desert which has shaped its history, lifestyles and architecture.

Founded in AD 1727 by Sawai Jaisingh II, Jaipur the capital of Rajasthan is famously known as the Pink City with broad avenues and spacious gardens. The capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur is drenched in history and culture. Here the past comes alive in magnificent forts and palaces, glowing pink, where once lived the maharajas. The hastling bazaars of jaipur , famous for Rajasthani jewellery, fabric and shoes, possess a timeless quality and are surely a treasure-trove for the shoppers. This fascinating city with its romantic charm takes you to an era of royalty and tradition.

Jaipur architectural planning may have been ancient, but its strangling was definitely modern. Best described by the City Palace complex, it brought together all that was excellent in Rajput and Mughal architecture, creating a new tradition that found wide currency over much of north India. As in the Mughal tradition, the durbar or court areas became much more open, characterized by a series of arched pavilions held on delicately crafted pillars. Ornamentation had always been a part of the state architectural heritage, now it became much more pretentious.

In the Pink City of Rajasthan, the festivals such as Teej, Diwali, Gangaur, Kite Festival, Elephant Festival, Camel Festival, etc. are celebrated with great fervour and joy. Originating from old traditions, these festivals and fairs are being delighted since ages.

Garhmukteshwar is a treasure pilgrim centre. Also referred to as Khandvi Van and Shiva Vallabhpur just because of its being an important centre of the Vallabh cult, Garhmukteshwar has been associated with mythology. It is said that this was the place where King Shivi, an ancestor of Lord Rama, had spend the fourth period of his life as an ascetic.Later, with the help of renowned sage Parshuram, he built a temple devoted to Lord Shiva.

Garhmukteshwar once boasted off a very ancient fort that is said to be built by later Pandavas, brothers of Kaurvas. A Maratha general Mir Bhawan furnished this fort during the Anglo-Maratha war. It is said that the Fort was in so good a condition when the British took possession of the place that it was found possible to locate the District Administration in it without incurring much expense on alteration. Sadly, not much remained of that Fort now and one can only trace some ruins that hardly signify the much-talked glory.

It is also believed that after two Ganas or disciples of Lord Vishnu, Jai and Vijai, had gained Mukti or salvation at Shiva Vallabhpur the place came to be known as Ganamukteeshwar. With time, this name is changed to the present Garhmukteshwar. The belief is that during the Mahabharat period, this place was an important centre of trade and also formed part of the capital of Hastinapur state.Garhmukteshwar and its twin city, Brij Ghat is a home of more than 100 temples. It is also known for its big annual fair.
